The Balance was the first non-Samsung watch to put bioelectrical impedance on the wrist, reading body fat, muscle mass, bone mass, and water percentage in about 45 seconds. At 35g in a 46mm aluminium case it is genuinely light for the screen size, pairing a 1.5-inch AMOLED with 14 days of battery and 26 hours of dual-band GPS. A Readiness score, sleep staging with breathing quality, and HRV cover the daily picture. Two caveats: the BIA reads the upper body only, so it drifts from a standing scale, and neither the Balance 2 nor the 2026 Balance 3 and Ultra brought the body composition sensor back — making this the odd case where the oldest model has the most interesting hardware.
Strengths
- Wrist BIA body composition, rare outside Samsung
- 35g for a 1.5-inch AMOLED
- Readiness score, HRV, and 14-day battery with no subscription
Tradeoffs
- BIA reads the upper body only, so it drifts from a standing scale
- 5ATM only — no diving, unlike the Balance 2
- No contactless payment on US units
